Visiting the Azores – sports: caving, climbing, paragliding and fishing

Vacations are best when you have fun! If you choose the Azores as your holiday destination you can be sure of one thing: adventure and fun are guaranteed. There are plenty of exciting activities you can choose from however the following article will mostly present you the sporting activities.

Visit and explore the caves around the Azores islands or go mountain climbing. For an adrenaline rush choose paragliding and admire the scenic view from overhead. Those who prefer the more relaxing and quiet activities we recommend big game fishing. Visit the Azores and find your own adventure!

Caves and lagoons

Discover the beautiful lagoons of the Azores located in volcanic craters, the magnificent caves, the remains of volcanic eruptions and lava flows. The volcanic activity on the islands has created marvelous things. Explore the several kilometer long tubular chambers, ledges, columns and caves on Terceira. In the Azores there are approximately 200 natural caves which stretch for kilometers in subterranean passages. Discover the secrets hidden inside and observe the strange life forms.

Climbing to the top of Pico

Anyone who enjoys mountain climbing and watching a glorious sunrise should head towards one of the most beautiful volcanic mounts, Mount Pico. Set out on the footpath at Cabeço das Cabras then prepare for a tough climbing experience. Don’t forget to wear appropriate clothes and shoes. It is recommended that you be accompanied by a guide.

The climb takes about 4-5 hours during which you can observe and admire the natural surroundings and the rare beauty of the landscapes. Inside the volcano cone there is a hollow called Furna which you can visit. The central crater is called Pico Grande which is about 700 m wide and simply amazing. From the top of the mountain if it’s a clear sunny day you can see the other islands in the distance: Faial, Terceira and the others.

Paragliding and micro-light flights

In the Azores you have the possibility to try new and unusual sports such as paragliding and micro-light flights. Visit Terceira or Santa Maria Island and enjoy an amazing view from above. At Anjos, Maia and Praia Formosa you can learn and practice these exciting sports. In Terceira the best location for paragliding are the mountains of Serra do Cume, at Praia da Vitória. Enjoy a unique panorama of the Azores and the ocean from a height of 545 meters.

Fishing in the Azores

The island of Faial is a perfect location for relaxing afternoon walks. Also it is ideal for big game fishing. All sport fishermen are welcome to join in and fish off the rocks or hop in a boat and paddle out on the deeper waters. You can catch wily marlins, fish in all colors and maybe even a shark.
