Visiting the Azores Islands – craftsmen and their handiworks

As the Azores Islands are quite isolated the locals had to be creative, so they started to put their hands to work and managed to overcome daily obstacles. Before they only made handmade things for themselves but new means of transportation has opened up new horizons for the inhabitants of the island.

The Azorean artistic techniques made of ceramics and wood, the embroidered crafts and others today are sources of income. The islands export textiles, arts and crafts made of fish scales and feathers, lace and tapestry, baskets and other products, all of excellent quality. Visit the Azores and take a souvenir with you to remind you of a wonderful holiday on the Mediterranean!

Azorean artwork: artistic flowers, doormats and ceramics

As it was mentioned before, the inhabitants of the Azores are quite creative. They can make delicate flowers from fabric, feathers, core of a fig tree or fish scales. Also make colorful doormats from fish fins and corn husk. They use the most frequently encountered plant, the Hydrangea in a skillful, magnificent and artistic way.

Also very common are the ceramic crafts such as clay dishes painted by hand which are produced at Vila Franca, Lagoa and São Miguel. Buy one of the unique pottery articles from Santa Maria or teapots, mugs and vases at Graciosa. All tourists who visit the Azores must simply have at least one object handmade by the kind and artful locals of the island.

Tapestry, embroidery and lace

Start preparing for colder days and buy one of the handmade sweaters in Santa Maria made from sheep wool. The dwellers of the island also make handmade bed sheets, colorful blankets and crochet. If you visit the island of Terceira you should definitely visit the shops with handcrafted embroideries.

The embroideries and laceworks are used on red, white and natural linen. All women must simply own perfectly created, handmade embroidery with soothing color schemes from the Azores.

Wickerwork: baskets and furniture

For a rustic touch in your house find a wicker element among the wide selection of handmade crafts. You can buy baskets and pieces of furniture which you can bring back to your home or place it in your summer house.

There are utilizing cans made of straw and several other Azorean handicrafts which you can own and keep as a reminder of your journeys and travels to the Azores Islands.
