Visiting Albufeira

Located in the center of Algarveregion, Albufeira is one of the most known holiday resorts in this part of the country. Appreciated mostly for its enjoyable beaches and serene waters, Albufeira is also an important historical site. Visiting Albufeira will try to give you some guidelines on the historical background of the city, on the best accommodation in the area and of course on how to get to Albufeira.

Historical background

Known as Baltum in the Roman times, Albufeira was conquered in the 8th century by the Moors and finally became part of the Portuguese territory in the 13th century under the reign of King D. Afonso III. The remains of the Roman period are partially visible, the most important site that attracts the visits of tourists is the skeleton of a former castle dating back to the period before Christ and that was almost destroyed during a disastrous earthquake in 1755. The city is now divided in two parts: the old town and the new town called Strip. Strip is home to the attractive nightlife of Albufeira, here you can easily find a club or a bar to match your preferences and get you on the mood to party.

Accommodations

Former fishing village, Albufeira became one of the most visited spots in Algarve in a couple of years. Thus, the accommodation options are also really developed, one can choose from various hotels, apartments or pensions. The prices can start at EUR 20 EUR per person in a  bed&breakfast accommodation and can even go up to EUR 300 per night in a really fancy four stars hotel close to the beach that includes a large number of facilities (spa, sports facilities, pool, leisure area). Among the most popular hotels that offer decent prices and provide great services we can suggest Hotel Apartamentos Soláqua, Balaia Golf Village,  Aparthotel Oceanus.

Getting to Albufeira

It is not hard to get to Albufeira Paradise as Faro airport, one of the main airports in Portugal is only 45 kilometers from the city. You can either take an one hour train from the airport that will bring you in Albufeira, rent a car or take a bus to the city center. Many hotels put at their clients disposal the possibility of being picked up from the airports and driven straight back to the hotel.
