Historic background

The small town of Obidos, with over 3.100 inhabitants at this moment, is known from the 13th century, when King Dinis offered it to his wife, Queen Isabel of Aragon, as a wedding gift. The tradition lasted 600 years. Every Queen of Portugal received Obidos as a part of her marriage portion. The medieval atmosphere of Obidos results even from its name, which comes from the Latin term “oppidum”, meaning fortified city.

The particularities of Obidos

If you decide to come in Obidos you’ll see why it was so loved by the queens for a long period of time. From the paved streets, lined with beautiful houses and colourful flowers, to the silent nights and beautiful sunset you’ll feel like actually living centuries ago.

There are four entrances in Obidos, but only one is for the tourists, which leads into the main street (Rua Direita). This street conducts to the main square (Praca de Santa Maria) and ends up with the beautiful castle, which dates back to the 15th century. Nowadays, the castle is a pousada hotel.  The main street in Obidos is filled with shops, from where one can buy souvenirs or beautiful gifts, like hand-made jewelleries, woolen articles or traditional ceramics. The locals are well known for their talent of making things out of ceramics.
