As you may know already, Setubal is not such a big city, having 89.303 inhabitants and a total area of 172.0 square meters. That’s why you can visit it in only one or two days. But in order to make you vacation longer you should visit the surroundings of Setubal.  You will see that you will not be sorry. The most important cities situated near Setubal are Lisbon and Almada. That’s why I consider that I have to present you some special attractions in these places:

Cristo Rei

The National altar of Christ the King is situated in the city of Almada and it was built after the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. It was built in 1959, to thank God for the fact that Portugal didn’t enter in the World War II. The Christ monument has 28 meters and it offers a great view of Lisbon, Almada and the River  Tagus. The statue stands on a pedestal which has 82 meters and beneath it is a deck for observation. The pedestal includes two chapels, the most important being the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace, a store, a restaurant and  two halls. One can go inside the pedestal by the elevator.

The National Pantheon of Portugal

The church of Santa Engracia, or the National Pantheon of Portugal, is situated in Lisbon. It is a 17th century monument and in the 20th century the church was converted into a pantheon, where are buried important Portuguese personalities. I will present them, in order to make an impression about the importance of the place. Therefore, here there are buried many writers, like  Joao de Deus, Almeida Garret, Guerra Junqueiro or Aquilino Ribeiro,  somepresidents of the country or the very famous fado singer Amalia Rodrigues. Also, there were built some empty tombs in the honour of Luis de Camoes, Nuno Alvares Pereira, Vasco da Gama or Henry the Navigator.  From the dome of the church you will be able to see a 360-degree panorama of Lisbon.

The Monastery of Sao Vicente de Fora

The Monastery of Sao Vicente de Fora is situated close to the church of Santa Engracia, in Lisbon.  It is one of the most important and known monasteries in the country . It includes the royal pantheon of the Braganza dynasty of Portugal. The monastery was built in the 12th century, but the present building was finished in the 17th century. It is appreciated also for its architecture, being one of the most beautiful mannierist buildings in Portugal. On the top of the Saint Vincent’s Church is a terrace, from where you can have a great view of the National Pantheon and the River Tagus.

After I presented you all these beauties you can realize that you must see things near Setubal. They should not be missed. For further information you can access www.sacred-destinations.com
