Monument to Christ

Similar to Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Monument to Christ (Christo Rei) located close to 25 de Abril Bridge is one of the most impressive monuments inLisbon and a great spot for admiring the entire area. The 28 meters high statue that stands as a pedestal on an 82 meters high gate was finished in 1959. The monument was built in honor of the Divinity that protectedPortugal during the World War II and it represents an importantLisbon symbol for all the Portuguese.

Santa Justa Elevator

Santa Justa Elevator (Elevator of Carmo) or thePortugueseEiffelTower as it is often called offers a great view over the city, especially Rosio Square and the Castle ofSt. George. The 45 meters high tower has actually a practical purpose, connecting down town to the Bairro Alto. After arriving on top of the elevator make sure you allow yourself enough time to enjoy the great view over the city while tasting a glass of Portuguese wine at the roof bar.

Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara

After presenting so many great places where one can stop and gaze at the city’s streets, shops and monuments, here is one of my favorite viewpoints. Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara offers a cool and relaxing spot for the hot summer days and a marvelous and multicolored panoramic view during the night. Located in Bairo Alto, this place is actually a wonderful garden that can be accessed by walking from Chiado or by means of Gloria Elevator, providing the tourists with perfect photographic opportunities. Once you reached Sao Pedro de Alcantara, you will have an amazing belvedere ofSt George’s Castle, The Se or Tejo. Another interesting thing you will discover on the roof is the famous azulejos tile map that displays the main Portuguese landmarks that can be easily observed.
