Flavors of Algarve

Being a region surrounded half way by the sea it is only natural that the menu consists mostly of fish, shrimps and shellfish. Taste the traditional dishes of the west: try caldeirada de peixe, also known as fish-stew and cataplana de amêijoas known as copper pan steamed clams. For those who are not fans of seafood we recommend cabbage and stewed chickpeas. Let us not forget about regional delicacies like almonds, carobs and figs or arbutus-berry locally called medronho which is distilled in the mountains and thus a special brandy is produced.
