Discover Batalha

The town of Batalhais situated in the Central Coastal Region of Portugal, more specific in Leiria District, at a distance of 122 kilometers from Lisbon. It counts 7.500 inhabitants and it is considered to be one of the most interesting historical places in Portugal. Actually, the town was founded by King D. Joao I after a huge event, the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota, in August 1385, which ended the crisis in the country. Main objectifs in Batalha

The Monastery of Batalha, known as Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitoria, is definitely one of the most beautiful abbeys in Portugal. It was included on the list of World Heritage sites by UNESCO, due to its historical importance. The monastery is a marvel indeed, a great Gothic monument in Europe, not just in our country. The mixture between the Manueline style and the Gothic architecture fascinates you. Here you may see the tomb of King Joao I and the one of his wife, Queen Philippa of Lancaster, and many other beauties that will take your breath away. The abbey houses also the Museum of Offerings to the Unknown Soldier. It was founded in the memory of the Portuguese participation in the 1914-1918 war and it contains trophies and many other offerings, left in the Monastery for the Unknown Soldier that fought on the First World War, in the Combatants League.

Special activities in Batalha

Besides all these great touristic objectives, the little town of Batalha offers a great landscape too, with vegetation and mountains. That’s why those who love hiking, climbing or karting will find here the best conditions for doing this kind of activities. But if you are not such a big fan of the extreme sports, you may occupy your time seeing or buying traditional crafts, such as trades, tinsmiths, masonry or tapestry. Even if it is hard to believe, young people from Batalha and those from across the country are still interested in this art. In fact, in the town there is a school where everybody can learn the secrets of the arts and crafts. Its name is Escola de Artes et Oficios.
