There are several interesting activities and things to do in the Algarve region among which you can also count horse riding and donkey riding. Horses are majestic animals which were used for many useful things in the past centuries. Today the modern accomplishments of men have excluded them from many territories which cannot be considered a bad thing, nonetheless the time when horses and horse riding were an ordinary phenomenon had a special atmosphere. Travel back in time and go for a horse ride in the Algarve region and if you can’t find a horse you might find a donkey.

Donkey Rides

Donkeys might not seem as graceful and majestic as horses but they are friendly, obedient and sweet-tempered creatures which will offer you a fun time. Riding on donkey back is actually an original way of getting around in Algarve. Donkey rides are usually organized by environmental associations, farms and estates with the aim of educating people about the natural wealth of the region. Since these kind animals walk in a slow pace you have all the time in the world to enjoy the magnificent scenery, the wild plants and flowers, archeological remains and monuments around Algarve.

Experience a unique feeling by bonding with these gentle creatures. There are less and less donkeys living all over Europe but the Algarve region is trying to save this species from extinction. The donkey version of horse carriage is the wooden mule-drawn cart known as ‘carro de besta’ or ‘carro de mula’ which can mostly be found in the coastal region and only used for touristic purposes.
